Fountain Square Cements Status as Indianapolis Art Hub with New Gallery Openings

INDIANAPOLIS — Fountain Square, the eclectic southside Indianapolis neighborhood long associated with vintage shops and indie music venues, is experiencing a surge in gallery activity that's positioning the district as the city's most vibrant visual arts hub.

Three new galleries opened in Fountain Square in the past six months, joining a growing collection of artist studios, project spaces, and established galleries that have made the neighborhood a weekend destination for art collectors and enthusiasts from across Indiana and beyond.

The newest addition is GRID Gallery at 1043 Virginia Ave, a cooperative space founded by eight Indianapolis visual artists who pool resources to maintain a professional exhibition venue and share curatorial responsibilities. Each member shows solo work for six weeks per year, with group shows filling the remaining calendar.

"We wanted a space that worked for working artists, not just hobbyists," said founding member and painter Delphine Mercier. "The cooperative model means no one artist has to carry the full financial burden, and it keeps the programming diverse."

Commercial Galleries Join the Mix

Alongside the cooperative spaces, commercial gallery Platform Arts opened at 1102 Prospect Street in November, representing a roster of eight regional painters, sculptors, and installation artists. Gallery director Thomas Park said Fountain Square's street energy creates an ideal environment for introducing collectors to new work.

"People are already in an exploratory mindset when they come to Fountain Square," Park said. "They're open to discovery. That's the best possible environment for introducing someone to art they didn't know they needed."

The neighborhood's longest-running gallery space, the Tube Factory Artspace on Virginia Avenue, has also expanded its programming this year, adding a sculpture garden and a rotating residency for artists from underrepresented communities.
