Local Bookstore Chain Expanding to Three New Indianapolis Locations
INDIANAPOLIS — A beloved local bookstore chain is set to significantly expand its presence across Indianapolis with three new locations planned to open by spring 2024, bringing independent bookselling to underserved neighborhoods on the city's north, east, and southwest sides.
Chapter & Verse Books, which currently operates two successful locations in Broad Ripple and Fountain Square, announced Tuesday that it will open new stores in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood, the Near Eastside, and Greenwood.
The expansion represents a $1.2 million investment in the local literary community and is expected to create approximately 25 new jobs across the three locations.
Meeting Growing Demand
"We've been overwhelmed by the community response to our existing stores, and we keep hearing from residents in other neighborhoods who want a local bookstore they can walk to," said Sarah Martinez, founder and owner of Chapter & Verse Books. "Independent bookstores are community gathering spaces, and we're excited to bring that experience to more Indianapolis families."
The Meridian-Kessler location will occupy a 2,500-square-foot space on North Meridian Street, just south of Kessler Boulevard. The Near Eastside store will be housed in a renovated building on East 10th Street near the Monon Trail, while the Greenwood location will anchor a new mixed-use development on Madison Avenue.
Each location will feature the chain's signature combination of new and used books, local author sections, children's reading areas, and small café spaces serving locally-roasted coffee.
Community Impact
The announcement comes as independent bookstores nationwide have experienced a resurgence, with many communities seeking alternatives to large chains and online retailers. Chapter & Verse has built a loyal following by hosting author readings, book clubs, and literacy programs for children.
"Having a bookstore within walking distance is going to be fantastic for our neighborhood," said David Chen, president of the Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood Association. "Sarah and her team have created something special with their other locations – they really understand how to make a bookstore feel like the heart of a community."
The Near Eastside location will be the first bookstore to open in that area in more than a decade, while the Greenwood store will serve the rapidly growing southside suburbs.
Timeline and Hiring
Construction and renovation work is expected to begin in January, with the Meridian-Kessler location slated to open first in March, followed by the other two locations in April and May respectively.
Martinez said the company will begin hiring for all three locations in February, with positions ranging from part-time booksellers to full-time assistant managers. The stores will also feature dedicated children's programming coordinators at each location.
"We're not just opening bookstores," Martinez added. "We're investing in Indianapolis neighborhoods and creating spaces where people can discover new stories, connect with their neighbors, and feel like they're part of something bigger."
